Practice Profile

Korumburra Medical Centre is a rural general practice established in 1967. It operates out of fully air-conditioned purpose built rooms in Radovick Street, Korumburra. Approximately 120 kms south of Melbourne.

The practice has seven consulting rooms and a well equipped procedure room. The practice provides a wide ranging general practice service to a diverse population. It provides medical cover for the local rural hospital both in patient and out patient care.

In 2000 the practice gained full accreditation and was reaccredited in January 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012.

Also in January 2003 we opened a branch clinic at 21 Clarence Street Loch. In May 2008 we moved our Loch Clinic to 13-17 Clarence Street Loch originally the site of the Greenhills Aged Care Facility.

Clinic Work
The Clinic currently consists of four partners, three associates and one getGP Registrar. All medical practitioners are vocationally registered and currently includes one female doctor. Doctors' work at both clinics and have access to patients notes across our network whether the patient is seen at Korumburra, Loch or after hours at the Korumburra Hospital. The clinic has a practice manager, four reception staff members on at any one time and three practice nurses.

Appointments are every 15 minutes (however, registrars are booked 3 per hour initially).  A wide range of patient ages and conditions gives a refreshing variation to the medical problems encountered.  Registrars are encouraged to establish their own patient base and to handover to a subsequent registrar.  Registras always have supervision available. Our clinic have regular clinical and doctors' meetings on a monthly basis.

The practice encourages the ongoing medical education via attending educational meetings run by GPA South Gippsland, satellite broadcasting meetings and a variety of local Continuing Professional Development meetings.  Being close to Melbourne there are an endless variety of programs and short courses available as well as the expanding role of distance education.

Teaching

Our practice is committed to the education of future doctors. We participate in the intern program where we have interns come to the practice for roughly ten weeks at a time. Medical students from Monash University Gippsland also visit our practice each year.

Hours / After Hours
There is a great deal of flexibility with the working hours of the medical centre. Currently the partners work approximately 8 sessions per week with one full day off and the associate works 6 to 8 sessions per week. On call is 1:8 first on call weekend days (weekends are split between 2 doctors) and on average one on call evening per week. Our doctors have six to eight weeks’ holidays at a time convenient to the practice and  we are able to cover their days off with our new locum doctor.
